This particular character dog ornament was so special to both Glenn and I that we both had a hand (or two) in decorating it. The candle clip allows you to fill gaps between branches for a grand display. This swashbuckling pup is amazing in his Victorian costume complete with ruffled collar, cape and boots with spurs. This rare scrap is incredible – the die cutting, colors, and craftsmanship are phenomenal – very hard to capture in photos. He is so lifelike you would have to see him in person to fully appreciate what went into producing this illustration made over 120 years ago. Even the little fringe under the banner looks so real. I added antique Dresden paper “Season’s Greeting” script to the banner and feathers to his cap. They look like part of the original illustration! To make the railing I selected antique deeply embossed fencing and Dresden paper fleur-de-lis border to wrap around a multi-tiered frosted glass ornament with magenta and green stripes. Glenn did a masterful job backing the illustration, attaching him to the ornament, and embellishing the tiered shapes with gorgeous trims.  I embellished the back with rare gold medallion surrounded by scalloped paper and magenta foil.

Dresden Star Ornaments are almost exclusively made with antique and vintage materials to include: glass ornaments from the 1890s to1950s (most of which were made in Germany); colorful Victorian embossed & die-cut paper “scraps” and chromolithographs from postcards and advertising trade cards (made in Europe between the 1870s and 1910); antique and vintage fabric to include chenille, lace, ribbon and metallic trims; antique and vintage tinsel from tree garlands and old-stock German-made Lametta tinsel; gold and silver old-stock Dresden paper trims, crepe paper, foil, gift wrap, spun-glass, and other embellishments.

Since many of our creations contain glass ornaments that are as much as 120 years old, the condition and patina will vary, which this is part of their vintage one-of-a-kind charm and character. Items described as “antique” are dated between the 1870s and 1920. Items described as “vintage” are dated between the 1920s and the 1950s (mid-century). We also use newer Dresden trims (on occasion) and crinkle wire (to wire-wrap ornaments for durability) made more recently in Germany using techniques and equipment that have not changed over the past 150 years.
