This Ornament Tells Quite A Story; Please Read Below:
I have cherished this illustration, though damaged on one edge, for years, as I have always treasured anything Fairy Soap related and LOVE and ADORE the Victorian fairy theme. I thought some day I could find a way to cut out the fairy and incorporate her into a fanciful ornament, and when I discovered this large vintage golden two-tiered topper with tall spire, I found it was the perfect scale to recreate the illustration in 3-dimensions! After carefully cutting out the fairy and backing her to light gold vintage starburst paper, I wanted her wings to look iridescent and translucent. I dusted her wings with our finest tiny silver antique glitter and diamond dust, added vintage multicolored metallic cording, and vintage lavender rhinestones, plus a golden star-shaped rhinestone for her tiara, antique cording for golden bracelet, and luxurious organza in pale buttercream and champagne pink to continue with the flowing lines of her dress.
To recreate the bell like the one in the original illustration, I found a beautiful antique spun-cotton bell the right size and added my own antique and vintage fabric florals in pastel colors. To recreate the vines that rung the bell in the original illustration, I took apart a very old antique trim with round silk cording in a lovely muted green color (the way they still curled though freed from the threads that were attached to them was a bonus) and incorporated these into the fairy, bell, and the top of the spire (where I added an antique fabric cherry blossom and ombre silk leaves).
To attach the bell to the fairy, I used a golden wire to reinforce both elements to keep them firmly in place. Gold and silver Dresden paper trims, plus more iridescent cording and metallic silver threads were employed to encircle both sphere shapes. I then made a circlet of vintage and antique florals specifically selected for their subtle colors and shapes, intermixed with antique glittered stamens, and draped the organza to flow in graceful curves with flowers and sparkling trims peeking through the translucent fabric.
